Alum Creates Custom Chef Knife Business

Don Nguyen, who earned an MSE degree in 2016, was inspired to pursue a career in knifemaking after having to cut onions at a friend's house with an extremely dull knife. Now, it's a full-time job and multiple restaurants around Tucson use his knives. Nguyen even works with local chefs to create custom knives suited to their needs and specifications in a "collaborative process."
“With the very first knives that I made, I was dead serious,” Nguyen said in a recent Tucson Foodie interview. “I spent a lot of time making sure that I learned the proper design, the geometry, the heat treating, and all of that stuff.”
While Nguyen says his engineering classes at the University of Arizona didn't set his career path, they still helped him on his way.
"It got me into an engineering mindset, which really helps me today,” Nguyen said.
