About MSE

High-Profile Research, Work-Ready Curriculum

Materials science and engineering is a highly ranked University of Arizona program offering undergraduate and graduate degrees with online and dual degree options. Comprehensive training, industry support and worldwide collaboration give students an edge with employers.

With nearly three decades of academic and research success, the department is known for its outstanding faculty, patented inventions, industry partnerships, commitment to global research and international exchange, and workforce-oriented undergraduate curriculum.

High-profile, life-changing research spans additive manufacturing, optical materials, integrated computational science and engineering, materials for energy conversion and heat control, materials synthesis, processing and fabrication, and heritage conservation. Students work on aerospace vehicles, soundwaves to destroy toxic waste, phononic quantum computing and organic semiconductors for flexible electronics, for example.

The MSE Student Experience

“I did well with math and science and felt like I could use these skills to make a positive difference, to do things that wouldn't otherwise be possible.”
Alex Miles, BS 2011 and optical scientist at Apple
"Having the opportunity to do research as an undergraduate is beneficial to my learning experience and it also prepares me for graduate schooling.”
Anne Ellis, BS 2014 and product and materials manager at DDL Inc.
“I never realized how much research professors are doing just for engineering at the UA, and they want you to get involved with their projects.”
Clare Cronin, 2018 undergraduate

Creative and Resourceful Academics

Student-driven research and signature courses in which faculty teach technical classes in their areas of expertise allow you to focus on your interests.

Small classes, a multitude of hands-on learning experiences, flexible curricula, individual attention, and high-profile, multidisciplinary research create an environment in which all students in MSE undergraduate and graduate degree programs can excel.

Local Impact, Global Partnerships

Through its work in multidisciplinary centers and labs across campus, industry partnerships, and global connections, MSE maintains an influential role in the thriving local economy and global scientific community.

The department’s entrepreneurial spirit is reinforced by the University’s commercial arm, Tech Launch Arizona, which helps MSE faculty and students move their inventions to market. Influential partnerships include an Intel joint online BS degree program.
