Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing to gain advanced fabrication system

The University of Arizona Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing is strengthening its role as a critical hub for semiconductor advancement. Semiconductor company MetaOptics announced plans to deploy its Direct Laser Writer system on campus, expanding research capabilities for the critical technology.
The Direct Laser Writer system enables rapid prototyping and fabrication of lenses. According to the company, the deployment is expected to generate user feedback and user demonstration opportunities, providing further technical validation of its "metalens" equipment and products, and serve as a launchpad to scale commercial production and collaboration in the U.S. market.
"By placing our Direct Laser Writer within a world-class semiconductor research environment in Arizona, we will be able to strengthen technical validation and gather valuable user feedback," said MetaOptics Executive Chairman Thng Chong Kim in a press release. "We believe this deployment reinforces our broader U.S. expansion efforts and deepens our engagement in Arizona's world-class semiconductor ecosystem."
MSE professor Krishna Muralidharan serves as director of the Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing. Installation of the new system is expected to begin in 2027.
