MSE Student On Award-Winning Design Day Team
Nearly 100 teams of engineering students converged at the College of Engineering's 2023 Craig M. Berge Design Day. The teams showed off a year's worth of engineering, and some won thousands of dollars in sponsored prizes for their work. MSE senior Jason Zhang was part of Capstone Team 23021, which won two awards for their work on a medical-grade spigot to mitigate safety hazards in laboratory settings.
Team 23021 worked with Roche Tissue Diagnostics, using CAD software, 3D fabrication techniques, chemical compatibility testing, and mechanical and fluid analyses to develop multiple design iterations. Each iteration was tested extensively to ensure that the design is ready for mass production. The improved spigot not only enhanced safety by eliminating mechanical failures and chemical degradation, but it also promised better ease of use.
For their work, Team 23021 earned the Ergo Dave Award for Best Use of Human Factors Engineering and the AZ Technica Award for Manufacturing Readiness, both worth $500 and both sponsored by Roche.
