MSE students at the University of Arizona triumphed at this year's UA/ASU Materials Bowl Senior Design Competition, reclaiming the coveted territorial trophy from the Sun Devils.

At the competition, judges were asked to vote on the top three senior design projects from student teams at the UA and Arizona State University.

MSE student Julian Battaglia took home first place at the competition with his project, Enhancing Reliability of Graphene Nanoribbon Transistors Through Encapsulation by Atomic Layer Deposition. The project focused on studying the reliability of field-effect transistors (FETs) made with atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), and improving them by adding a layer of aluminum oxide through atomic layer deposition.

Other UA student projects at the competition included Eric Fingalson's Machine Learning Force Fields for Molecular Dynamics Modeling of Perovskite-TiOx Interfaces; Kat Korch, Alexis Loustaunau, and Harrison Pershing's Improved Thermal Protection System to Metallic Sub-Structure Attachment for Re-Entry Vehicles; and Alejandro Soto Orozco, Samuel Jacob Andrews, Laurinne Valentine Blanche's Verification of Computer-based Modeling for Development of Refractory Alloys.
