University of Arizona MSE professor Pierre Deymier accepted the 2025 College of Engineering da Vinci Fellowship award, an award made possible by donors to the college’s da Vinci Circle that includes a one-time grant of $10,000.

This award is the latest in a series of honors recognizing a 40-year research career that began with a childhood fascination for science kits.

“My brother and I did a lot of experiments with these kits – engineering at the level of kids,” said Deymier. “The kits raised something in my brain that said, ‘You may want to do this for the rest of your life.’”

Following that youthful awakening, Deymier completed a doctoral degree at MIT and joined the U of A faculty in 1985. Since then, he has made multiple advances in materials science and is a world leader in phononics, a field focused on how sound waves move through matter.

Additionally, Deymier was the founding director of the New Frontiers of Sound Science and Technology, a research group working on multiple projects related to acoustics.
