Sammy Tin
Sammy Tin is the Patrick R. Taylor Endowed Department Leadership Chair and head of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Arizona. He received his BS from Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo, MS from Carnegie Mellon University and PhD from the University of Michigan, all in materials science and engineering.
Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Tin was director of the Thermal Processing Technology Center and Charles and Lee Finkl Chair of Materials Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His research has focused on developing manufacturing processes and alloy chemistries for materials used in aerospace and power-generation applications.
Tin serves on the Editorial Committee for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, Materials Science and Engineering A, and was the recipient of the 2004 Rolls-Royce Mark Shipton Patent Award, the 2006 IOM3 Cook/Ablett Award, 2007 ASM Marcus A. Grossmann Award, 2008 Ralph L. Barnett Teaching Award and 2014 Armour College Excellence in Teaching Award. He is an elected Fellow of ASM International and is chair of the 2021 International Conference on Superalloys. Tin has been granted three U.S. patents and has two patents pending. He has authored more than 125 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
